FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date:  June 22, 2020

Contact:  Carol H. Palcic, Mayor

As the Fourth of July approaches, Southwest Greensburg law enforcement and public safety agencies want to remind residents that fireworks cannot be discharged within the Borough.  All fireworks must be at least 150 feet away from an occupied structure, whether the residence is occupied at the time or not. As you can imagine, that greatly limits areas in the Borough where it would be permitted to set off fireworks.  If you need to ask if they are permitted in a certain place, that means it’s too close to call and you should assume the answer is no.

Even though the law changed and it is now legal to purchase fireworks, consumers still need to follow the rules.  Local leaders and law enforcement are encouraging consumers to exercise caution when using any fireworks in acceptable areas.  According to House Bill 542, one must be at least 18 years old to purchase, possess and use consumer fireworks

We ask that you be considerate of your neighbors and refrain from the use of fireworks within the Borough. If it is determined that someone is violating the fireworks law or causing a potentially hazardous condition to other structures, they will be charged accordingly. The fire department is busy enough, they don’t need to be called to fires due to the irresponsible actions of others.

Thank you and have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
